Galicia has an attractive and very distinctive folk textile tradition based on hand-woven linen and wool.

Anna´s talk is a colourful introduction to the work - and world - of the last Galician weavers, with a special focus on the pile fabric or felpa coverlets. Anna concludes with an overview of hand-weaving in Galicia today and the challenges that it faces.

There is an opportunity to view and handle pieces from Anna´s textile collection after the talk.

THE LAST CRAFTSMEN AND WOMEN OF OLD GALICIA

Born in the first half of the 20C into a rural world of peasant farming Galicia´s craftsmen and women played a very important role. Their work often combined function with a simple beauty and employed natural or recycled materials.

This talk, illustrated with colour slides of tinsmiths, basketmakers, potters, wood craftsmen, weavers and blacksmiths enables you to imagine life in rural Galicia centuries ago.

Anna has researched and written on Galician folkcrafts for over 10 years.
